The richest man in the world, according to Forbes Mag

Maybe the tide is changing as far as the world economy is concerned. Experts have touted this century as the rise of Asia. India and China are the powerhouse economies with the former rightfully claiming an expert talent pool to beat. Now Forbes Magazine says that the richest man in the world is a Mexican: telecom magnate Carlos Slim Helu who's beaten IT guru Bill Gates and genius investor Warren Buffett for the top spot with a net worth of US$53.5 billion!

Second Act

“You’re an opportunist. Your mind stirs and your heart leaps every time there’s an opportunity to explore or a potential to develop.”

Over the years, on separate occasions, I got that bit of ‘career advice’ from very close friends who’ve walked with me during life’s various ups and downs.

Whereas everyone else has pegged me down as a writer/communicator – and I can’t blame them, because I’ve made a pretty decent and honest living out of it the past 20 years.

But I’m not my colleagues - it’s not the crafting of words or even the ultimate outcome of the prose that spikes my adrenaline.

It’s the prospect of a potential to be realized, whether by me or by someone else.

It’s what I learn, and how I can become an even more fully realized human being because of it. It’s what I can help develop, whether it’s a skill, an ability, a natural resource, or a venture that can blossom.

It’s that discovery that makes me want to pound on the keyboard.

And yes, it’s what I can profit out of, the honest, hard way.

The minute I see something along those lines, something in me clicks. The writing has always been secondary.

But opportunity, and even what I learn and earn, is just the tip on the iceberg. The two quotations on the home page of this blog speak of what’s beneath.

What we have right now reflects our choices, conscious and subconscious, rightly or wrongly.

To explore and develop means to create. But we can’t create out of nothing, we can only make out of what we are.

Whether totally understood or not, articulated or not, it is the combined system of our family background, experiences, values, principles, attitude toward life, perspective of the world, our fellow human beings and of God (or of His absence, in the case of atheists) that have formed our most cherished dreams and the steps we have taken in our own journeys to reach them.

I’m in the second act of my life, trying to make sense of my past and present to create a more better tomorrow. This is the chronicle of my journey, and the lessons I learn along the way.

I'll learn a lot from you, too. The experiences and insights will definitely vary as we go on but the basic questions will remain:

What are my dreams?
What is in me that can fulfill them?
What are the things that I need to change?
What direction do I take?
Ultimately, what greater good do I serve?
